History of

The Mountain

Rakaposhi, meaning “Shining Wall” in the local language, is one of Pakistan’s most iconic peaks and has captivated mountaineers and explorers for generations. First summited in 1958 by a British-Pakistani expedition via the southwest ridge, Rakaposhi stands not only as a mountaineering challenge but also as a symbol of pride for the Nagar Valley people.

The mountain is renowned for its extraordinary vertical relief rising nearly 6,000 meters from the Hunza River Valley in just 11 kilometers making it one of the steepest ascents in the world. Rakaposhi is visible from the Karakoram Highway and is celebrated in local folklore, poetry, and culture.
