History of

The Mountain

Hunza Valley has a deep and diverse historical background shaped by ancient trade, military conquest, and cultural exchange. Once a small mountainous kingdom, Hunza was an important stop on the Silk Road, serving as a gateway between China, Central Asia, and the Indian Subcontinent.

The Altit and Baltit Forts, dating back over 700 years, showcase the region’s rich architectural and military history. The Hunza royal family ruled the valley for centuries until the princely state was dissolved in 1974. The region has preserved its unique traditions, language (Burushaski), and way of life, making it a cultural treasure of Pakistan
